How to Pivot, Reinvent, and Thrive in a New Professional Chapter
What if the job you have today isn’t the one that will define your future? I’ve reinvented myself multiple times—and each pivot brought me closer to a career I love. I’ve always been a pursuer of change, and this is reflected in my career journey.
I started as a 4th Dimension developer (DB Dev), evolved to Delphi 2.0, VB.net, and .Net (backend Dev), and then left the server side to become an iOS developer. A couple of years ago, I decided I’d had enough of development and transitioned into a Scrum Master role. Then, in November, I faced a pivotal moment: I was about to be fired. Instead of letting that happen, I took control, searched for an alternative, and now I’m a Recruitment and Operations Lead.
Life happens, and you need to adapt. I’ve done this repeatedly, often without overthinking it. But this last time was different. I proposed doing something completely outside my comfort zone. My boss took a chance on me, and we’re both thrilled with the outcome. I love what I’m doing now, even though there are moments when I feel overwhelmed and wonder if I’m in over my head.
Of course, I was afraid of failing, of not understanding what was needed, of being unable to make everything fall into place. But that’s okay. I didn’t need to have all the answers on day one. Now, I manage my role well, and the experience has given me a huge boost of confidence.
Was this a walk in the park? Absolutely not. But I’m incredibly proud of the result and the growth it has brought me.
Is It Time for a Change?
In my case, I was pushed into an extreme situation and turned it around. But you don’t have to wait for a crisis to make a change. Recognizing the need for change is the first step. But where do you go from there?
How do you know it’s time to pivot? What signs should you look for?
Are you feeling burned out?
Do you feel stuck, with no room to grow?
Are you aligned with your values, or are you just staying for the paycheck?
Ask yourself:
Does my current role excite me?
Am I growing in the direction I want?
If the answer to these questions is no, it’s time to stop and rethink your career.
Where Do You Start?
Know Yourself:
Start by understanding your skills, passions, and values. Personality tests like Myers-Briggs or StrengthsFinder can provide valuable insights into what drives you and where you might thrive.
Explore New Paths:
Once you know yourself better, start exploring new industries, roles, or opportunities. Take online courses, attend webinars, or shadow someone in a field you’re curious about. This will help you test the waters before diving in.
Upskill or Reskill:
Learning new skills or upgrading existing ones can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a minor tweak or a significant shift, investing in your growth is always worth it.
Network Strategically:
If you’re changing industries, networking is crucial. People in your target industry don’t know you yet—so introduce yourself! Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals, attend industry events, and build relationships that can open doors.
Combat Imposter Syndrome:
Yes, you’re new to the industry, but you’re not new to hard work, problem-solving, or teamwork. I’ve felt that too—wondering if I was in over my head. But here’s what I learned: imposter syndrome often shows up right before a breakthrough. Leverage your existing experience, and don’t let self-doubt hold you back.
Ask for Help:
Find a mentor who can guide you through this transition. Having someone who’s been there can make all the difference.
Make a Plan:
Create a transition plan that works for you. Save money, start a side project, or work freelance to build experience. The hardest part is beginning, but momentum will carry you forward once you do.
Embrace the Rebirth
Career reinvention isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself. It takes courage, curiosity, and a willingness to step into the unknown. But as I’ve learned through my own journey, the other side of fear is growth, fulfillment, and new possibilities.
So, if you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, take it as a sign. Your career rebirth might be closer than you think. Start small, take one step at a time, and trust that the journey will lead you somewhere extraordinary.
